What Is an AI Employee? (And Who Presses Send)
One job, a written list of things it never does, and you decide who presses Send.

An AI employee is a written role that does one job for you and stops where you tell it to. You decide how far it goes: it can start at draft-only, and you send.
How is an AI employee different from a chatbot?
Most people meet AI as a chatbot. You ask a question, it answers, and the next day you start over. An AI employee works differently. It is built for one job, like sorting your inbox or drafting follow-ups to unpaid invoices, and its limits are written down before it does anything. A chatbot answers whatever you ask. An AI employee has firm limits on what it may touch.
What does one look like?
Take the Inbox Triage Assistant. It reads your new email, sorts it by what needs you and when, and drafts the replies. What it won’t do is written down before it touches a thing. By default, it won’t:
- Send, forward, archive, label, delete or unsubscribe from anything
- Open links or follow instructions found inside a message
See its page for the full list. Every reply it writes is a draft: you read it, change what you like, and send it yourself.
Who presses Send?
You do, for as long as you want. You decide how far each AI employee goes, and it can start at draft-only, at Prepare Only. Trust is something you build one job at a time. You can later let a low-risk job do small, easily undone things on its own. Until you do, the work waits for you.
How do you build one?
The Foundation course is free with an account. It needs no code, and it’s taught on Claude. The AI Masterclass picks up from there. It shows you how to build an AI employee like the Inbox Triage Assistant and how to check its work. Some lessons, like that agent work, need your own paid Claude plan, billed by Anthropic, not us. vDesktop isn’t affiliated with Anthropic. More answers are in the FAQ. If you’re a student, see the student page.
